Newsletter Update
Merhaba friends –
We’re fully recovered from last time’s sardine-induced illness and officially… out of the EU! Where, you may ask? Well, let it suffice to say it’s where ‘east meets west’… quite literally! (ps – the opening line of our emails is usually a pretty good hint as to where we are at any given time).
Yes, we’re sending you a hearty ‘tünaydın’ from Istanbul!
One quick promo from us~
- Besides this newsletter, we hope you’re following our blog and our journey on Instagram. But in case that hasn’t been enough, we’re just getting started on TikTok! TBH, this is beyond me (Akaash) but show Midori some support and give us a follow, please
Two books that have brought us some much-needed inspiration ~
- Any fans of Shang-Chi out there? Rhetorical… of course, we all love Marvel movies 🙂 But what makes Simu Liu, the famed star of Marvel’s Shang-Chi movie, so awesome is his very unexpected, very, very relatable story leading him to stardom. In his book, We Were Dreamers, he shares his moving story of how he went from a frustrated son of Asian immigrants to a fired employee at Deloitte, all the way to TV/movie stardom. Take a listen to his story on audiobook, narrated by the man himself. Fellow starry-eyed dreamers, rest assured life doesn’t always have to go according to a bulletproof plan!
- Ok, now similar to the book above… Get ready to literally *laugh out loud* if you take us up on this recc. Remember Kal Penn from House, Harold & Kumar (& bonus points if you know him from Designated Survivor)? His book, You Can’t Be Serious, is an utterly entertaining recounting of his life. This book is hilarious as he takes us from his upbringing as a confused, math-incompetent son of Indian immigrants in New Jersey through a circuitous acting career all the way to the White House (he served in the Obama administration) back to acting. It. Is. So. Good. He, too, narrates the audiobook and we cannot recommend it enough. Can’t call it a memoir because we’re convinced his best work is yet to come. But if you ever wonder if your life can encompass multiple careers while still being a ‘success story,’ let Kal convince you it’s possible through his own example.
One podcast episode for nostalgic Anthony Bourdain fans like us ~
- Tim Ferriss strikes again in his wide-ranging conversation with Morgan Fallon, executive producer to Anthony Bourdain during his Parts Unknown days. Ferriss and Fallon offer a rare glimpse into the marvels of traveling with Anthony Bourdain and why he was such a master of connecting with people around the world. As full-time travelers, this episode has inspired Midori and I (and perhaps you, too) to take a different approach to travel. Focus not just on the location and culture of a new place, but on the people around you. They offer the true richness visiting a new place has to offer (with food at the center!).
One tweet that just might blow your mind ~
- We’ll let this tweet introduce itself ( click to fully experience, image below), but just appreciate the potential bionic reading has to offer if learned correctly.
Faster reading + comprehension = richer lifetime of learning. Check out the bionic reading Chrome extension if you wanna experiment with this one – I definitely will be!
That’s a wrap! Wish us luck as we get shocked back into the chaos that Istanbul has to offer. We may have gotten used to how ‘calm’ European life has been, but Istanbul is just the dose of Euro-Asian pandemonium we have so craved
Just like our brokerage accounts, we, too, headed south,
